Teaching the Real, Using the Virtual: A Recap

Professor Yesha Sivan has given a lecture in the English Department of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on Monday 31 January, 2011 entitled: "Teaching the Real, Using the Virtual: A Recap".

Based off 3D3C (3D environment together with Community, Creation, and Commerce) framework, Professor Sivan discussed the possibility of collaborating between the Tel Aviv Academy and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a course he has been piloting. Currently in its 6th version, both real and Second Life Metaverse Island labs will take place. While the class is geared towards engineering, design students, and those with some programming experience, students with lesser experience can help with the marketing and public relations elements of the final year project: groups design and create a unique business model in Second Life; submit projects on the Metaverse Island, in empty racks found in a museum (lending to the idea of knowledge-based and constructivist models of learning), and saved on flashdrives. One such project was a “Hoshen Breastplate” which acted as a social item, requiring the wearer to exchange breastplates (or brooches) with others in order to complete the design. Certainly an important element when considering the creed, “Where Innovation Meets Application.”

Real economic values can be realised between student association in both Israel and Hong Kong, along with opportunities for blended learning in the form of real life classroom interaction and e-learning platforms such as Moodle (for grading) and blogging activities (for student feedback and reflection). These go hand-in-hand with PolyU’s prominent presence on Facebook, YouTube, renren and TuDou. Currently, PolyU’s collaborative projects extend beyond 1,000 including student exchange and academic programme partnerships. Hence, in line with PolyU’s motto: “To learn and apply for the betterment of mankind” such collaboration would only extend PolyU’s global relationships and continue its role as a leader in progressive, diverse and international affairs.
